Three tips when buying a gaming mouse

The genres you play will affect the features you should focus on for your mouse.

  • FPS. If you play a lot of FPS (First Person Shooters) games such as CounterStrike, Valorant or Overwatch, precision and ergonomics are the most important things for you. So choose a mouse that’s good for both fast and slow precision movements, preferably an optical mouse with weight customisation for just the right feel.

  • MMO. If you are more interested in MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) such as World of Warcraft, it may be worth investing in a mouse with many side buttons with hotkeys to all the commands you make in the game.

  • MOBA. If MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games like League of Legends or DOTA are more your thing, you need a bit of both. Choose a mouse with some extra buttons for easy gaming, without sacrificing precision or comfortability when using the mouse. This option is also suitable for players who play many different types of games.

DPI (Dots Per Inch) refers to how many pixels the cursor passes over when you move the mouse. Since there are more pixels on larger screens, you want a mouse with a high DPI count for large screens, and vice versa.

Look for a corded mouse unless it’s super important that it’s cordless. The cord charges the mouse so you don’t have to change the battery, and it also offers a more stable connection with less chance of interference and less lag between the mouse and computer.

It's quite easy to wipe off your gaming mouse to keep it clean, but how long ago was it since you washed your mouse pad? PCgamer tells you how to do it without ruining it.
