3 things to consider before buying an electric fire

When you're considering an electric fire or stove, think about what you want it to do. Are you looking for something that will add a decorative touch to your home, or do you need it to provide heat as well?

Electric fires and stoves can emit heat, but the amount varies. The heating power will depend on the size of the room you want to heat, so take that into account when making your decision.

An electric fire or stove shouldn't be used as a primary heat source. Instead, it's best used as a supplement to other heating methods.

  • Freestanding model. A freestanding electric stove has the advantage of being able to be moved if, for example, you want to rearrange the furniture.

  • Built-in model. It can be very attractive to have an electric fire built into a wall. But it requires a great deal of construction work, and is limited to a number of possible locations. Can the wall take it? There are also wall-mounted electric fires and inserts that work in a classic fireplace.

Here is a tutorial on how to install a wall-mounted electric fireplace.

  • Heat-free flames. A relatively common function today is heat-free flames. The fire or stove stops generating heat at the touch of a button, but you will still see the flames. This can be nice if you want the ambience, even on a hot summer day.

  • Multicolour. Some electric fires or stoves have what's called a multicolour effect which allows you to adjust the colour and shape of the flames according to your mood.

  • Sound. Some models have built-in speakers that give you the atmospheric crackle from the fire.

  • Remote control. It's preferable for an electric fire or stove to come with a remote control so you can adjust the flames or turn it on or off without having to get up.
