Three tips when buying facial massage accessories

Facial massage is a simple way to increase blood circulation in your face, which can improve your skin’s appearance and temporarily minimise swelling.

  • Gua sha is a massager made from rose quartz or other mineral stone that’s used to apply pressure to different areas of your face and body. Massaging helps your face relax, increases blood circulation and gives you a moment to pamper yourself.
  • Jade rollers are small cylinders made from jade that are attached to a handle. They are used to massage your face to boost your skincare routine.
  • A skin roller, or derma roller, is a cylinder with hundreds of tiny needles that penetrate your skin in order to cause controlled damage that increases the production of collagen.

The technique of piercing the skin with small needles is called microneedling and has long been practised in beauty salons. A skin roller is designed as a home version of this technology. But remember the following:

  • In-salon treatment is performed by trained specialists, and both needles and skin are sterilised before and after treatment to reduce the risk of infection.
  • There are risks associated with performing this treatment at home, such as infection due to lack of hygiene and also poor quality needles that are too long and risk damaging the skin.
  • Skin inflammation can lead to hyperpigmentation and scarring – which is usually the direct opposite of what the user is trying to achieve. Learn more about post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation at Eucerin.

It’s great to have a moment for a massage, some downtime and a chance to relax. However, your facial massage can have a greater effect if you combine it with some effective serums. Apply any type of serum, such as one with active vitamin C or hydrating hyaluronic acid, and massage it deep into your skin before finishing off with a nourishing moisturiser. Just make sure that your massager has been cleaned properly first.
