3 tips when shopping for a kids' fleece jacket

  • Windproof fleece comes with an inner windproof membrane that stops chilly winds from getting through. It's a primary school favourite and can be worn by itself during spring and autumn. You can find windproof fleece jackets with or without a hood. For safety, ensure that any hood can be easily removed and detached.

  • Polar fleece is a thicker fleece with an extra fluffy surface. The fluffy fabric retains a lot of warm air, making it cozy and perfect for wearing as a standalone jacket, like during car trips. But, polar fleece typically lacks windproof qualities, so it can feel a bit nippy when the wind picks up.

  • Using fleece as a middle layer can be an option, although windproof fleece tends to be a bit stiff and bumpy when worn under a jacket or snowsuit. Since jackets and snowsuits generally offer wind protection, many people opt for a thinner and more flexible fleece as an insulating middle layer. In this case, it's best to avoid fleece tops with hoods, as they don't fit well under outerwear.

Classic fleece, made from 100% polyester, is long-lasting and shares many qualities with wool. It's lighter and can handle frequent washing. Keep in mind that fleece is made from plastic sourced from non-renewable oil – so choose fleece made from recycled material. Unfortunately, polyester fleece also releases large quantities of microplastics with every wash, especially when new. To help reduce this, use a wash bag that catches microplastics when you wash your fleece. Also, remember to be cautious with polyester fleece around open flames, as it can catch fire easily.

Wool fleece is made partially or entirely from wool, and it offers excellent warmth, breathability, and insulation even when damp. But, wool can feel scratchy against the skin, and you can't wash it too often. On the bright side, wool doesn't absorb odours like synthetic fibres, so it doesn't need frequent washing. It dries somewhat slower than traditional fleece.
