3 tips when shopping for a belt

Certain materials are more sensitive than others and require care:

  • Suede is a popular material, ideal for everyday and party wear. But it's sensitive to moisture, something to keep in mind if you're going out in the rain.

  • Leather is a sustainable material that often gets better with age. Treat it regularly to keep it looking extra good.

  • If you don't want to use animal products, go for faux leather. One type is polyurethane, but there are also plant-based materials, more environmentally friendly. Faux leather rarely has the same durability as genuine animal leather, though.

  • Fabric is easier to clean and can be washed without getting damaged. Simply invest in a laundry bag to protect your belt and help it last longer.

Looking for a sustainable leather belt? Check ecolabels like Nordic Swan, Ökotex and the EU Ecolabel. Another environmentally friendly option is natural tanned leather.

Read more about different labels on the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s website.

When choosing a belt, remember that its size indicates the measurement from the buckle to the centre hole in cm/in. Measure your waist to find your correct size, keeping in mind that you will adjust it in the middle. If you need to, most belts can be shortened.

Think about the width of the belt, especially if you're wearing it in jeans or trousers with belt loops. The belt should be wide enough that it doesn't slide up – larger loops need a wider belt.
