Three things to consider before buying a hedge trimmer

Which hedge trimmer suits you depends on how tough the job is, i.e. how much of the hedge needs to be cut, how thick the hedge is and how easily accessible it is.

  • Light. If you have a normal-sized hedge, you can do the job quickly and easily with a cordless hedge trimmer. It is also very quiet, lightweight and easy to maintain. There are also electric hedge trimmers that are usually designed for small hedges. They are corded, which means that you’re limited by the length of the cord.

  • Tougher. If you have a lot of hedges to trim, a petrol version may be your best bet, as they offer larger blades and more long-lasting power.

The more space between the blade’s teeth, the thicker the branches it can cut. So inspect your hedge and buy a hedge trimmer capable of cutting the thickest branch.

Hedge trimmers are powerful machines and can cause serious injuries if handled carelessly. So safety should be your top priority when buying a hedge trimmer. For example, consider your experience of using similar machines. Features to look out for include automatic stop and a safety guard between blade and handle.
