A fire basket is like a small grate that can be moved around. They are available in different sizes and designs, and are suitable for stuff like barbecuing sausages in the garden, making your terrace a bit cosier or warming yourself outdoors on cold autumn evenings.

There are small folding fire baskets that are easy to take out on a camping trip as well as larger ones that can stand in the garden all year round. Some of them hang from stands, while others have legs. Fire baskets also come in different materials. The steel ones rust over time. But fire baskets made of copper, wrought iron or cast iron often stay new-looking for longer.

Before you start a fire, you should cover the ground with a base plate. Put paper and wood in the fire basket, pour on some lighter fluid and then light it with a match. Lighting the fire from above gives better heat as well as less ash and soot, compared to lighting it from the bottom of the wood pile.

Always have a fire extinguisher or water bucket or hose nearby in case of an accident. When you have finished, you should cover the embers with a lid.

Which fire basket you should choose depends on how you want to use it. If you want to be able to move the fire basket around easily, it’s better to choose a slightly smaller and lighter one. If you want your fire basket in the garden all year round, it’s best to choose one that is painted or has a coating that protects against winter weather.
