3 tips when shopping for a dinner set

Suppose you're looking for dinnerware that can last a long time. In that case, we recommend choosing a material that suits your needs and preferences. Here are some options:

  • Feldspar is a type of porcelain that's highly durable and resistant to discolouration and chipping.

  • Bone china is made with ash from animal bones, which gives a strong material that won't become brittle even when made very thin.

  • Stoneware is thicker than porcelain. This gives it a rustic look and feel. It's also ovenproof.

  • Flintware is beautiful and practical. But it's porous and can absorb moisture, so choose a dinnerware set with a moisture barrier to ensure longevity.

  • Melamine is one of the more durable materials. It's hard to scratch and almost impossible to crush, but avoid using it with hot food, which can pose a health risk. Find out more about melamine

  • Enamelled are coated with burnt-on glass, which enhances their durability. They should be hand washed to protect the surface.

When it comes to feeding little ones, 2 things matter most: plates that don't get hot and ones that won't easily break.

Enamel surfaces can easily get very hot, so they're not the best choice for children. instead, consider using silicone plates, which are unbreakable and perfect for young children learning to feed themselves. Plastic also has this advantage – so it doesn't matter if the plate accidentally slides down onto the floor.

When choosing dinnerware, looks aren't everything - you also want something practical. A dishwasher-safe set is convenient, so you don't have to wash it by hand. It's also nice if it's microwave-safe and oven-proof – you can quickly heat up food directly on the plate. It can be freezer-safe too.
