Three tips for buying a thermos

Although most thermoses are good at keeping drinks hot and cold, there are models designed specifically for one or the other purpose.

  • Cold drinks. If you’ll mainly be using the thermos to keep your water or other drinks cold, there are certain features you should look for. The size and shape of the flask opening, for instance, are significant. You may want to be able to add ice cubes to help keep the contents chilled. Choose a thermos large enough to provide the number of servings you want.

  • Hot drinks. If you prioritise hot coffee over cold water, you’ll need other features, such as a built-in mug. Another feature that’s important to prioritise is a leakproof design, as hot coffee leaking into your bag is a whole different prospect to cold water. Additionally, the thermos should have a grip-friendly outer material, so that even a user wearing gloves can hold it securely.

Most thermoses come in stainless steel, but it’s a good idea to double-check that the one you intend to buy does too. Stainless steel is more durable, safer, insulates better and ensures that the contents retain their original taste.

A bigger thermos is better at keeping drinks hot for longer. Although clearly a larger size makes the thermos less portable. But this is worth considering if you’re in charge of providing coffee on a camping trip. If you want to store food in the thermos, you’ll need a [food flask](/cl/461/ Kitchen-Accessories?attr_60541611=60541615). They tend to be bigger, with a larger opening at the top.
