Three tips when buying a lean-to greenhouse

In most cases, you will not need planning permission for a greenhouse in your garden, but there are a few exceptions:

  • If you live in a listed building, if your house is situated in a national park or area of outstanding natural beauty, or if you want to erect the greenhouse in your front garden where it will be highly visible to passers-by.
  • If the overall height of the greenhouse exceeds certain limits.
  • If the greenhouse is closer to the boundary of your property than a certain limit.

Even if you don’t need planning permission, you should always be aware of any building regulations that may apply. The rules may also differ between different local authorities, so double-check the rules with your local planning department. There are various websites where you can read more about this.

We highly recommend a lean-to greenhouse with automatic window openers. They open when the temperature inside the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature, so you can go away on holiday without having to worry about it getting too hot in your greenhouse. There are versions that require no electricity, but are opened by automatic expansion at a certain temperature.

Safety or toughened glass is much stronger than ordinary glass. It’s resistant to hard knocks and temperature changes.

If a pane of safety glass breaks, it shatters into tiny pieces rather than dangerous large shards. We therefore recommend that you invest in a lean-to greenhouse made of safety glass.
