Three tips when buying hair serum

Some serums contain silicone, which forms a protective shield around each strand, leaving hair shiny and supple. But silicone can be difficult to wash away, and can block nourishing products such as conditioners and hair masks. That’s why you should avoid using silicone products if you have curly hair, which needs to be hydrated to keep curls bouncy. Read more about how silicone works and what to look for in the list of ingredients here.

Different types of serum produce different results. Here are three examples:

  • Moisturising hair serum adds moisture to the hair for an instantly healthier feel. This will be suitable if you have dry and brittle hair.
  • Volumising serum is used on fine, flyaway hair to build up body.
  • Anti-frizz serum tames wild hair, leaving you with shiny, well-nourished hair.

Some people like the practicality of a pump or spray bottle, while others prefer drops that are easier to dose.

Just like your skin, your hair can also be damaged by strong sunshine. So it’s a good idea to choose a hair serum with sun protection if you know you’re going to be out in the sun without a hat or cap for protection.

There are also serums with heat protection. Apply it to your hair before blow-drying or styling with straighteners or curling tongs, as the heat can easily damage your hair.
