3 tips when buying a fishing jacket

Your fishing jacket should be windproof and waterproof to keep you dry and comfortable in any weather. Some jackets are only water-repellent, meaning they can handle a limited amount of moisture. But a truly waterproof jacket will keep you dry even in heavy rain. Look for waterproof zips on the pockets to protect your phone. It's a bonus if the cuffs and waist can be tightened to keep water out.

Water resistance is measured in water column. This tells you how much water the material can withstand in one square centimetre:

  • up to 2000 millimetres: water-repellent, not waterproof
  • 4000 millimetres: withstands light rain for a short time
  • 6000 millimetres: withstands heavy rain for a short time, light rain for longer
  • 8000–12000 millimetres: withstands heavy rain for a couple of hours, light rain for longer
  • Over 12000 millimetres: withstands heavy rain for several hours.

Pressure on the clothing, like sitting, kneeling or wearing a backpack, can push moisture into the fabric. So choose a jacket that can handle some pressure.

If you’re fishing in the winter, go for a larger size to fit a thick jumper under your jacket. And if it’s really cold, getting a thermal jacket is a good idea.

Staying warm and dry during your fishing trip is essential. But avoid sweat building up inside your jacket. Look for a jacket made of breathable material that lets water vapour escape. That way, you won't end up feeling damp and chilly when it cools down.
