3 tips when buying a balance bike

We know it's tough keeping track of your growing child's height and finding the perfect bike size.

But with balance bikes, it's a little easier. Your child only needs to be able to put both feet on the ground with a slighlty bent knees. A saddle height that's 2-4 centimeters shorter than their leg length is usually just right.

Small 10-inch wheels don't always come with standard bike tyres, and the options can differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. There are 3 common types:

  • Hard plastic tyres make more noise when riding on tarmac and can be a bit slippery, but are puncture-free.
  • Foam tyres are also puncture-free, but softer and make less noise. Sometimes people confuse them to compact rubber tyres, which weigh more.
  • Pneumatic tyres are classic bicycle tyres that come with inner tube. They aren't noisy and offer good grip.

Look for models with smart features that can make the experience safer and more enjoyable for your child. Here are a few to consider:

  • Adjustable height: Look for an adjustable saddle height so you can raise or lower it for your child.

  • Brake: A handbrake can help your child learn how to use brakes before graduating to a pedal bike.

  • Bell: Some bikes come with a bell, but if not, you can always buy one separately. Although not necessary, many children love having a bell on their bike.

Good to know: While balance bikes are typically found in the toy category on shopping websites, they should still be ridden with care in traffic.
