One tip is to look for a soundbar that has a second number listed next to the channel number, for example "number of channels: 3.1”. This means the bar has a subwoofer making your soundbar a convenient two-in-one solution.

The number of channels refers to the number of speakers in your bar and thus the amount of sound you will hear.

  • Two channels: Some soundbars have only two channels, one on the right and one on the left. Since a soundbar is primarily intended to improve the sound of your TV, two channels may not be enough and you might want to consider a couple of speakers instead.

  • Three+ channels: A soundbar can play surround sound with as few as three channels. Real audio connoisseurs will want more than three channels.
