3 things to consider before buying a charcoal barbecue

When it comes to charcoal barbecues, there are 3 main types to choose from, each with its own pros and cons:

  • Kettle grills: These are the most common type of charcoal grill, and for good reason. They're easy to use and maintain, with even heat distribution. Plus, they're often the most affordable option.

  • Barrel grills: If you need to cook for a big group, a barrel grill might be the way to go. They have a larger capacity than kettle grills and you can use one side for indirect heat while the other side has charcoal.

  • Kamado: Made from enamel-covered ceramic, Kamados are on the heavy and expensive side, but they offer better temperature control and versatility. You can smoke meat at low temperatures or cook pizza at high temperatures.

If you don’t want to spend all day lighting the barbecue, there are some handy tools you can use to get started quickly. A chimney starter or an electric fire starter are great options. Alternatively, you could choose a grill with a propane panel underneath it.

The charcoal barbecue come in different sizes, with the kettle one usually being the smallest and the barrel one being the largest. Keep in mind where you're going to put the barbecue and how much space you have available. Don't forget that it'll take up space not only while cooking, but also when stored.
