3 tips when buying a fishing vest

Before purchasing a vest, double-check how much moisture it can withstand. Some materials are water-repellent and can handle a little bit of moisture. But if you want complete protection, go for a waterproof vest that won't let rain seep through.

Water resistance is measured in water column (mm):

  • up to 2000 mm: withstands light moisture
  • 4000 mm: withstands a little drizzle
  • 6000 mm: withstands heavy rain, but longer in drizzle
  • 8000–12000 mm: withstands a couple of hours of heavy rain, longer in drizzle
  • At least 12000 mm: withstands several hours of heavy rain.

And if you keep your phone in your pocket when fishing, make sure the pocket is waterproof too.

When choosing a vest for fishing, look for one with mesh to help you stay cool and sweat-free. Even though vests don't have sleeves, they can still get warm and sweaty at the back. Mesh allows moisture to escape, keeping you comfortable and not sticky. It's also a good idea to pick a vest with an adjustable waist, so you can easily adjust the fit depending on what you're wearing underneath, whether it's a thinner or thicker top.

A great vest should have enough room for all your gear, and still be flexible. Look for vests with pockets in various sizes – bigger ones for boxes and smaller ones for leaders and other accessories. D-rings can also be handy for hanging gear you need close at hand.
